San Francisco Tavern Pool League Fall 2009 Master's and President's MVP Tournaments

The San Francisco Tavern Pool League will hold preliminary rounds of a multiple round MVP tournament over February 8th, 9th, and 10th of 2010. The field of contestants in these tournaments will consist of the two top players from every pool team in the league (with exceptions, which are noted at the end of this page). There are 128 players expected in this tournament.

These preliminary rounds will take place in locations that did not qualify teams for the Fall 2009 playoffs, giving business to bars that did not receive revenue by hosting a playoff round match at their bars.

MVP Tournament Structure

The MVP Tournament's structure is similar to the NCAA basketball tournaments, with regions (bars) holding tournaments simultaneously. On Monday, Feb 8th and Tuesday, Feb 9th, two bars with two tables each will host tournaments consisting of 32 players. There will be 16 players playing matches on each table. One table's matches will consist of players in the upper level Master's classification (divisions A & B), and the other table's matches will consist of players in the lower level President's classification (divisions C, D, & E).

Matchups will be set prior to the tournament night, so that players will know where to arrive. Each player will be given a time to arrive to play his/her match for the evening, which will be a race to 2 format (best of 3). If a player does not arrive at his allotted time, the opponent will win by default and advance to the next round.

The player winning the match on night one moves on to play a second night at a one table bar elsewhere in the city on Wednesday, Feb 10th. In this second night, 8 players will play a single round of matches down to 4 players, using the a race to 3 format (best of 5).

16 players (4 players from each region) will advance to the finals in each classification (Master's/President's). The finals will be held at the Billiard Palacade on Sunday, February 14th, at 1 PM. This tournament will be a race to 2 format (best of 3), (with the possibility of increasing the race in later rounds if time permits) held on 9 foot regulation-size pool tables.

Tournament Directors

There will be two board members present at every two table bar tournament, and one board member present at every one table bar tournament.

Board members will be designated as tournament directors and will run the tournaments by: providing guidance; watching shots; and settling rule disputes. Tournament directors have the authority to place players who are taking a considerable amount of time completing their shots on a 45 second per/shot clock.

A player will be placed on a shot clock only after they have been warned that they must pick up their shooting pace. Only the tournament director has the authority to warn a player, and place a shot clock on a player. A warning should not be issued during a players turn, but between turns.

Tournament Rules

The tournament will be held using the rules of the San Francisco Tavern Pool League for Fall 2009. Copies of these rules are on the league's website, located at www.sfpool.com/rules.html.

Fouls

Players are responsible for calling their own fouls. However, the Tournament Director may rule on a foul where there is a dispute if they saw the shot in question. Players should ask the Tournament Director to watch a shot if they believe it may result in a foul. If a Tournament Director has not been asked to watch a shot, he/she can still rule on a foul dispute. In these cases, the Tournament Director's ruling is final.

Bystander's may NOT call fouls, or coach a player while he/she is shooting. No one may tell a shooter to mark a pocket for the eight ball shot.

Practice Time

No practice time will be afforded players before their scheduled match at the preliminary rounds on the actual tournament tables. If a player wishes to practice on a table, the player must do so before the match night on their own time, or at a nearby tavern that has a pool table. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

All finals matches will be held on Billiard Palacade's 9 foot regulation tables.  On the date of the finals (Sunday, February 14th, 2010), players are allowed to rent tables at Billiard Palacade to practice before or in between their matches. No player is allowed to practice on the tables reserved for the finals. The San Francisco Tavern Pool League has arranged with Billiard Palacade the use of tables for the final. No greens fees will be collected at any time during the tournament.
